Metabisulfites are used to preserve the wine and most wines have some sulfites. If there were no sulfites, it would not last long at all and for sweetened wines, it would probably re-ferment.
Stored properly at 55 degrees out of sunlight and a full bottle, should last 3 years or better anyhow. If the color starts turning a little brown, then you have reached the end of its life.
References :
Not long, modern wine is made to buy and drink, the old days of a wine having to be stored are past,
References :
General rule for whites is 3 - 5 years. If stored properly you can keep it much longer. My inlaws are from the Mosel and make wine. I've had some excellent whites that were 25 plus years. It really depends on white wine and quality you get. If it taste good now go ahead and drink it, when you come back to the states bring a case with you. As far as other must haves -German chocolate, if you're into the nutcrackers get those, and plum snchapps. ,<spelling
References :
you must try absinthe and hash. they are legal over there, so why not try them out. As for the wine, just drink it and buy another, decent wine is cheap over there, no sense keeping it around to gather dust.
